Krabi is one of Thailand’s most jaw-droppingly beautiful destinations — a landscape of vertical limestone karsts rising from emerald water, hidden lagoons, world-famous Railay Beach only accessible by boat, and some of the planet’s best rock climbing. If you’ve seen dramatic Thailand landscape photography, it was probably taken in Krabi. Here’s your complete guide.
How to Get to Krabi from India
Krabi has its own international airport (KBV) with direct and connecting flights. However, most Indian travellers find it easier to:
- Option 1: Fly to Phuket (direct flights from India) → take a bus or minivan to Krabi (3 hours, ₹300–₹600) or speedboat to Ao Nang (1.5 hours)
- Option 2: Fly India → Bangkok → Krabi (connecting via Bangkok Airways or Air Asia). Total journey: 6–8 hours
- Easiest for most: Include Krabi as part of a Phuket + Krabi combined trip — fly into Phuket, take transfer to Krabi, fly home from Krabi or transfer back to Phuket for the flight
Where to Stay in Krabi
Ao Nang — Best Base for Most Travellers
Ao Nang is Krabi’s main tourist town — good range of hotels (budget to luxury), restaurants, beach clubs, and longtail boats to Railay departing every 15 minutes. Most Krabi tours also depart from here. This is the best base for first-time visitors.
Railay Beach — Most Romantic, Boat Access Only
Railay is the most beautiful beach in Krabi — set between towering limestone cliffs on a peninsula only accessible by longtail boat (15 minutes from Ao Nang). There are several excellent resorts here including the legendary Rayavadee. Staying on Railay is magical but more expensive — budget 30–40% more than Ao Nang hotels.
Klong Muang / Tubkaek — Quiet Luxury
North of Ao Nang — quieter, more upmarket beaches with Sheraton, Sofitel, and Anantara resorts. Best for couples wanting a peaceful retreat with luxury amenities and stunning bay views.
Top Things to Do in Krabi
1. Railay Beach
Even if you’re not staying on Railay, take the longtail boat from Ao Nang for the day. Explore East Railay, Phra Nang Beach and Cave (one of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches), and the lagoon accessible via a short (steep) hike. Cost: ₹200–₹300 per person each way on the longtail boat.
2. 4 Islands Snorkeling Tour
A full-day boat trip visiting four stunning islands off the Krabi coast — Koh Mook (Emerald Cave, a magical swim-through sea cave), Koh Kradan (pristine white sand), Koh Ngai (crystal clear snorkeling), and Koh Chuak. Includes snorkeling equipment, lunch, guide. Cost: ₹2,000–₹3,500 per person. One of our favourite tours in all of Thailand.
3. Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua)
Climb 1,237 steps to the summit of Tiger Cave Mountain for one of Thailand’s most spectacular panoramic views — Krabi province spread out in all directions, limestone karsts as far as the eye can see. Free entry. The climb takes 30–45 minutes each way. Go early morning (before 9 AM) to avoid the heat. Extremely rewarding.
4. Rock Climbing
Krabi is one of the world’s top rock climbing destinations — the limestone karst walls of Railay and Tonsai Beach attract climbers from across the globe. Beginners to advanced — half-day introductory sessions available from ₹2,500–₹4,000 including equipment and an instructor. No experience needed for beginner courses.
5. Sea Kayaking Through Mangroves & Sea Caves
Paddle a kayak through mangrove forests, into semi-submerged sea caves (hongs — enclosed tidal lagoons), and through dramatic limestone archways. The Hong Islands kayaking tour is one of Krabi’s best half-day activities. Cost: ₹2,500–₹4,000 including guide and equipment.
6. James Bond Island / Phang Nga Bay
Technically located in Phang Nga province, this iconic island (Koh Tapu) featured in “The Man With the Golden Gun” — a single pillar of limestone rising dramatically from the sea. Most easily visited as a day trip from Krabi. Cost: ₹2,500–₹4,000 per person.
What to Eat in Krabi
- Ao Nang Walking Street: Best street food in Krabi — fresh seafood, pad thai, mango sticky rice. Open evenings.
- Seafood BBQ at Ao Nang: Choose your fresh fish/prawns/squid, have it grilled on the spot. One of the best food experiences in Thailand.
- Krabi Town Night Market: More local, less touristy than Ao Nang — great for authentic Thai food at Thai prices. Worth a half-day trip from Ao Nang.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days are enough in Krabi?
3–4 days covers the highlights comfortably: Railay Beach (1 day), 4 Islands tour (1 day), Tiger Cave + Ao Nang Beach (1 day), rock climbing or kayaking (1 day). 5 days allows a more relaxed pace with a day trip to James Bond Island.
Is Railay Beach worth visiting?
Absolutely — Railay Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The combination of pristine white sand, turquoise water, and vertical limestone cliffs rising on three sides creates a setting unlike anywhere else on earth. Even a half-day visit is worth the longtail boat trip.
What’s the Emerald Cave in the 4 Islands tour?
Emerald Cave (Tham Morakot) on Koh Mook is a stunning sea cave — you swim 80 metres through a completely dark tunnel (life jacket provided) to emerge into a hidden lagoon enclosed by cliffs, open to the sky, with a hidden white sand beach inside. One of Thailand’s most magical natural experiences.
